Dear United Latinos Familia,
We know that this year has been tough, we have fought for our members’ right for a safe workplace, poured into the streets to demand Black Lives Matter, struggled to get out the vote virtually, and worked through the day-to-day crises faced by our members. Despite all the downs of this year including a global pandemic, we have many things to be proud of too, DACA was reinstated, TPS was extended, and we are welcoming a new Federal Administration in January.
We started the year by celebrating the success of our New American Citizenship Scholarship Fund program, our program gave the most grants we had ever given in a one year period, and we were planning the 2020 United Latinos Educational Conference, we were so excited to welcome everyone to New Mexico in May. Little could any of us foresee the devastating effects of COVID-19 across the globe. The pandemic affected a majority of our members who in the blink of an eye became frontline essential workers. COVID-19 has drastically changed the lives of our members, the soul of our Union, and the way we organize. The United Latinos jumped into actions and began translating resources and information around COVID-19 for our members. We decided to postpone the 2020 United Latinos Educational Conference until it is safe to meet in person. The pandemic has affected black and brown communities disproportionately, and so early on we knew that we had to find ways to connect as a community, we began our Voces Latinas/Latino Voices Webinar Series.
Our Webinars became an effective way to communicate and we are so happy that we were able to meet to talk about issues that impacted our members, our communities, and our families. The first webinar showcased Latinx Leaders within our Union who continue to tirelessly work for our members, then we learned about the State of Latinos and how COVID-19 has disproportionately affected people of color. We sat down with Esther Lopez to discuss the state of the United Latinos and envision a liberatory future together. Our last webinar featured organizers from Black Lives Matter movement, the Immigrant Rights movement, Racial Reparative Justice movement, and the LGBTQ+ movement, together we pledged to be intentional in building an inclusive community and intersectional movement. Our Webinars were viewed by thousands, our members wanted to have these conversations, so you all showed up.
As 2020 draws to a close, I cannot help but to reflect on the opportunities that lie ahead, there is much more work to be done, we must continue to organize and fight for justice. The biggest lesson of 2020 that we must carry to next year is that we are stronger together. I started this letter by saying that 2020 was a tough year, so please take a moment to reflect and process this year, mourn the loss and celebrate the victories. Looking forward to 2021, there are many opportunities ahead, but we must organize in order to be able to achieve the respect, equity, and justice that we seek!

Queridos Miembros de Los Latinos Unidos,
Sabemos que este año ha sido difícil, hemos luchado por el derecho de nuestros miembros a tener un lugar de trabajo seguro, hemos salido a las calles para exigir Las Vidas Negras Importan, luchamos para sacar el voto en noviembre y hemos superado las crisis del día a día que enfrentan nuestros miembros. A pesar de todas las dificultades de este año, también tenemos muchas cosas de las que estar orgullosos, DACA se restableció, se extendió el TPS y damos la bienvenida a una nueva Administración Federal en enero.
Comenzamos el año celebrando el éxito de nuestro programa de becas para Nuevos Ciudadanos Americanos, nuestro programa otorgó la mayor cantidad de becas que jamás habíamos otorgado durante el ciclo fiscal 2019-2020. Estábamos planeando la Conferencia Educativa de los Latinos Unidos 2020, estábamos muy emocionados por darles la bienvenida todos en Nuevo México. Ninguno de nosotros podía haber previsto los devastadores efectos del COVID-19 en todo el mundo. Sin embargo, la pandemia afectó a la mayoría de nuestros miembros, quienes en un abrir y cerrar de ojos se convirtieron en trabajadores esenciales. COVID-19 ha cambiado drásticamente la vida de nuestros miembros, el alma de nuestra Unión y la forma en que organizamos. Sobre todo, la pandemia a afectado a las comunidades negras y morenas de manera desproporcionada. Los Latinos Unidos se lanzaron a la acción y comenzaron a traducir recursos e información sobre COVID-19 para nuestros miembros. Decidimos posponer la Conferencia Educativa hasta que sea seguro reunirnos en persona y comenzamos una serie de talleres virtuales Voces Latinas para reunirnos en comunidad.
Nuestros talleres virtuales se convirtieron en una forma eficaz de comunicarnos para hablar sobre los problemas que afectan a nuestros miembros, nuestras comunidades y nuestras familias. El primer taller virtual mostró a los líderes latinos dentro de nuestra Unión que continúan trabajando incansablemente para nuestros miembros, luego aprendimos sobre el estado de los latinos y cómo COVID-19 ha afectado de manera desproporcionada a las personas de color. Nos sentamos con Esther López para discutir el estado de los Latinos Unidos y visualizar juntos un futuro liberatorio para nuestra organización. Nuestro último taller virtual estuvo integrado por organizadores del movimiento de Las Vidas Negras Importan, el movimiento por los derechos de los inmigrantes, el movimiento por la justicia reparadora racial y el movimiento LGBTQ +, juntos nos comprometimos a ser intencionales en la construcción de una comunidad inclusiva y un movimiento interseccional. Nuestros talleres virtuales fueron vistos por miles, nuestros miembros querían tener estas conversaciones, por lo que todos asistieron.
Ahora que el 2020 se acerca a su fin, no puedo evitar reflexionar sobre las oportunidades que tenemos esperándonos, hay mucho más trabajo por hacer, debemos seguir organizándonos y debemos seguir luchando por justicia. La mayor lección de este último año que debemos aprender y aplicar a el próximo año es que juntos somos más fuertes. Comencé esta carta diciendo que 2020 fue un año difícil, así que tómese un momento para reflexionar y procesar este año, lamentar la pérdida y celebrar las victorias. Pero también es importante recordar que hay muchas oportunidades esperándonos el próximo año, pero para obtenerlas debemos continuar organizando para poder lograr el respeto, la equidad y la justicia que buscamos.
