The United Latinos of the UFCW Denounces the Trump Administration’s Threat to Deploy I.C.E. agents for Massive Deportation Waves

On Monday June 17, 2019 – President Trump tweeted  that U.S. immigration agents are planning to make mass arrests across major U.S. cities. Over the weekend, President Trump tweeted the cancellation of the planned raids in order to allow the Democrats to negotiate over the country’s asylum laws.  This is a threat to many immigrant families across the country and it is a direct threat to our members and their families – many of whom are of mixed status. When our members are under attack, what do we do? Fight back! As such, the United Latinos of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union reiterates their commitment to stand in solidarity with immigrants and continue to fight for workers threatened by Trump’s actions.

“We have to be the change we want to see, it is up to us.  When we committed to the labor movement we did so with the intention of achieving justice, union familia, there is nothing just about our members and their families living in fear. No one should be afraid to go to work fearing that it might be the last time they see their families because their workplace can be raided by I.C.E. We can not idly stand by as this happens to our members, our familia, our communities” – Rigo Valdez, President of United Latinos

June is Immigrant Heritage Month, a month meant to empower, uplift, and celebrate our immigrant stories. As the United Latinos of the UFCW we made a commitment to fight for immigrant rights. Our organization transcends borders and refuses to operate within a system powered by bigotry and racism. As the United Latinos, we emphasize the value that immigrant workers bring to our communities and movements. It is shameful that the Trump administration continues their anti-immigrant and anti-worker agenda. As an organization we refuse to acquiesce to how working class families and immigrant workers are being treated.  As an organization we must organize, mobilize and educate our members and communities.

As the United Latinos  we stand with our core values of PROUDLY choosing love over hate, we will stand in solidarity with our immigrant and refugee members and fight for immigrant working communities always.
